Happy 100th Homecoming

This weekend was wonderful. Baylor's 100th Homecoming celebration and "Thanksgiving" with my family. (Yes, I realize it's still October. Some of my Minnesota family came to Waco, so we had Thanksgiving part 1...2 Thanksgivings, who's gonna argue with that?!?)
Here's my weekend in pictures...

Playing at the park...

Baylor Homecoming Parade...

Catching up with old friends...

Loving my school...

Family...

Great weekend with great people.

when you give a mom a call of desperation...

...you end up with a kitchen full of spices! Apparently phones calls starting with "Mom, I want to cook something, have any ideas?" followed up by "lemon pepper, one lemon, frozen chicken, goldfish, jelly, stale bread, peanut butter, and cheerios" (after being asked what I have available in my kitchen) can really make the maternal instinct kick into overdrive. I guess there's no real recipe that calls for those ingredients all at the same time? Who knew.

So a couple short weeks after this convo, our pantry got a facelift!

Name a spice/seasoning, it's now in my kitchen, thanks to good ol' mom. Combined with the stack of recipes my NiNi just gave me, and a little inspiration from Julie and Julia (not to mention the numbers on the scale lately...thank you P Terry's and Chuy's), my mission is to learn to cook. Not only to cook, but cook something edible, that could be a challenge.

Any recipe suggestions?

The Big Move

Picture FILTHY. Now picture FILTHY on crack. That is what my new house looked like when I arrived on Thursday. Disgusting beyond belief. So with our cleaning crew of many (aka: parents, friends, cousins, aunts and uncles) and three solid days of scrubbing every single inch of this place, it's almost clean. Scrub. Rinse. Repeat ten more times. Eleven in some places. And I only wish I were being dramatic about this.

The hippies who lived here before did not think electricity was necessary. I mean who needs AC in the Texas summers? Turning lights on? Cooking on the stove? Washing your clothes in this crazy new invention called a washing machine? Apparently not a top priority when you have enough incense and special "grass" (grown in your own backyard) to last you a lifetime. So the fact that the washer/dryer, AC, hall lights, and stove/oven were not working was not discovered until our move in week. (a few calls to the landlord and Sears, and a new washer, dryer, and stove are being delivered Saturday. yay!)

The good news is that I love this house. I wanted an OLD house, and I got it. And all of the good, bad, and ugly things that come along with it. But I love it. And I love that I'm officially living in Austin now. I still have a million boxes to unpack, and feel it necessary to clean this place several more times. But I also have to pass the nursing boards next week. So until I pass, my life will consist of unpacking boxes, cleaning, studying, and refusing to walk around without shoes on until all remnants of the former tenants are long gone.

I have pictures for you, but my camera somehow got lost in the mix, and is now hiding in one of the many boxes. I'll find it eventually, but until then, I'll leave you with a teaser...

(this is pre-front yard maintenance, but now this is home.)

today is exactly

one month 'til my birthday.
and one week 'til I move into a house that i love.
and maybe one day closer to me posting pics of the aforementioned house?

There's No Such Thing as the Real World?

If there's no such thing as the real world, then I'm not really sure what I'm about to jump into. Because I'm pretty sure it's about the closest thing to the so-called "real world" as I can get. No more being a professional student, and onto the job. To be honest, I don't really know how to not be a student, so this should be interesting! I'm sure I'll adjust really quickly! ;)

With that said, I think it's time to tell y'all what's up. I've made some minor adjustments to the original plan, but not without a lot of thought and a couple agonizing days of decision making. So what will the next step be for me? (umm, I feel a drum roll is necessary here....)

Welllll, I recently accepted a position as an EMERGENCY ROOM NURSE in AUSTIN, TX! I will be working at a hospital in downtown Austin starting this summer. I had two interviews a couple of weeks ago, and will be going back to ATX tomorrow morning for all of the new employee paperwork and other fun stuff, plus a new employee nursing test. (which I need to study for tonight!)

I am excited about Austin, what a fun place to live! Yes, I am bummed that the majority of my friends are in Dallas area and I won't be, but that just means I will have to take lots of trips to visit you all! (And I have a feeling this will be a lot easier without the school nonsense tying up my schedule.) And y'all came come play in ATX!

I have an appointment with a realtor on Tuesday to find a house. Oh yah, I forgot to mention, my current roommate will also be moving to Austin, which will be great! Roommates again, and a friend in Austin :) 2 other classmates are going to be in Austin too, so that's fun.

I'm excited about having a yard. And having Baylie back with me. And having random Austin places to hang out. Weird, hole-in-the-wall, random local band type places. And living in a place equally as weird as Galveston. And living closer to my cousins and uncle. (and a little bit closer to Waco). And getting to spend a lot more time with Alex and Kylie because they're growing like weeds. And getting a bike. And taking Baylie to dog parks and for walks at Town Lake. (or Lady Bird Lake, excuse me). And going to ACL. And just doing my part to...

So that's the plan! I'm moving to Austin! Yay! I'll keep you posted on the house hunt, so you can plan your first visit to ATX with me :)

a sick little piggy went to mexico...

...so we did not. That's right, no swine flu for me. Or should I say H1N1? This is the only pig we encountered this week, compliments of Jorge :)

The cruise ended up being THE CRUISE TO NOWHERE, thanks to the CDC for their recommendation of avoiding all "non-essential travel to Mexico." While I feel this was essential, apparently Carnival cruise lines and the US government did not, and who am I to argue? So we had 5 "Fun Days at Sea" instead. I can't complain though, they were five days of relaxation!

This is where I've been all week? Maybe? Somewhere out there?

Meet NANCY! She's our fun friend we met our first day. We love her, she was so cute! This is a little glimpse of her and MA in the ABBA Dancing Queen class. :)

One of MA's DC roomies (Courtney) and her mom and gma were on the cruise too, so that was an added bonus! Fun people!!!

It was a fun trip, and I'm so glad we were able to go!

Now I'm back on land, but feel like I'm still on a boat. Anybody have a solution for sea-legs?

all aboard!

first, i want to thank you all for the congratulations, sweet messages, and encouragement these past couple of days...and for joining me in celebrating my final farewell to UTMB! :)

now onto the good stuff...want to know one more good thing about living in Galveston? it is home to several cruise ship terminals, and there just so happens to be a cruise leaving from here tomorrow. and here's where the past couple of days come into play...

wednesday night: my roommate and i call carnival cruise lines on a whim just to check it out

same wednesday night, 10 minutes later: phone call ends, with our names are on a waiting list, deposits paid, with the promise of a phone call if a room opened up.  no obligation, we can decide then if we really want to go or not.

thursday afternoon: sally from carnival calls with an opening, we realize this is really the only week we know we won't be able to take NCLEX, and we tell her to book it. we're going on a cruise. :)

friday: graduate!

saturday: play time with fam and friends

sunday: realize we have no summer clothes here, and frantically go shopping. "swine flu in mexico" becomes the most popular news story.

tomorrow: leaving for a cruise!!!! :)

so that's the story. yaaaay we're going on a cruise! i'm so excited. it's random. i'm looking forward to just relaxing! (and i know my pasty white skin is looking forward to a little sun as well, it neeeeds it!). so there ya go, open water here i come! and don't worry, i won't be making out with any pig farmers in mexico during this vacation. (guess i'll have to save that for next time? ha)

but seriously, how ironic is it that the swine flu is taking over now of all times?  antibacterial hand sanitizer will be my best friend for sure!!!

anybody know what today is?

my graduation day!!!

the day i thought might never come is here and i could not be more ready! yes, it was just one year, but oh how a year can drag on and on, and be full of so many 'wonderful' surprises! and a whole lot of school was packed into these past 12 months! and today, it's over, and the next chapter can begin! (well, i still have to take boards and yada yada yada, but...). my parents drove in last night and katie's here too! we have a pinning ceremony this morning (a traditional nursing graduation ceremony), and graduation tonight. except i'm not going to the actual graduation, just the pinning...decided the beach (or anything really) would be more fun than a loooong graduation ceremony! but the point is I'M GRADUATING! YAAAAY!!!

weird weather

yesterday i got caught in a monsoon. it was insane. i had no real plans yesterday, and decided it would be a great day to nerd it up. i left galveston right after lunch to hit up hobby lobby for supplies, and maybe rent a movie. hobby lobby is up the interstate only about 20 miles from galveston. my quick trip turned into hours when the sky apparently had a huge seizure about 10 minutes in and slammed I-45 with ridiculous amounts of thunderstorm rain, lightning, wind, and zero sunshine. we're talking pitch black at 2 in the afternoon. tornado anyone? interstate traffic completely stopped, signs falling on cars, access roads flooded and tons of cars stuck and flooded. it was weird weird. i ended up in houston because i couldn't get off the interstate (you thought i was being dramatic about the access roads flooding? nope). and what better place to take refuge from the storm than by shopping at the galleria? haha. but didn't even buy anything. anyways, it was weird. and kinda scary. and makes me want to live in a place that doesn't flood just that much more.

in other news, we just turned on the AC. the AC and heater haven't been turned on even once since the end of october. open windows with the breeze (ocean breeze at that) has been enough on hotter days, and lots of blankets when it was pseudo-snowing. knowing me and my major aversion to being hot (and my deep love of the AC), you realize this is momentous. the electricity bill has been our friend lately. buuuut welcome back air conditioner, how i've missed you.

some call it OCD...

...but I call it drive. Or excitement. Or vision. Or something. Whatever you call it, my fixation lately is SEWING! I don't think it quite meets the requirements of OCD yet, dad, but thanks for the suggestion. ;)

So, can I sew? Well, no, not exactly. But that's not the point. Because I WILL learn to sew. Soon. I have my own private tutor named Laura...I pay her in kolaches and sonic slushies. It works out well for both of us! I have a book from my mom, and fun random things from my grandma. And as of tonight, thanks to a sale on amazon, I will soon have this.....

This beauty should arrive sometime next week. And once I get my hands on this thing, your grannies better watch out! Cuz I'm for sure going to give 'em some competition! ;)

quality news

"POTTY-MOUTHED POO FIGHT LANDS MAN IN COURT"

These are the things that concern the people of Galveston. This was a headline in our daily paper. I was really just looking at the paper to see how Saturday worked out as the locals joined together on the seawall and attempted to set the world record for the longest Cupid Shuffle line dance. I'm so disappointed I missed this occasion, seriously. This is just one of the reasons Galveston is great. And ridiculous. And you should come visit.

the big one (x2)

this morning was stressful. the test of all tests. the big one. all of the things from this past year came down to passing this one test..i wasn't so much concerned about just passing the test, but if i failed i would have to keep dealing with this school, and i really don't think i could handle that. i read a 1200+ page book cover to cover and then some in prep for this test, if that shows you just how much i did not want to be stuck with them for any longer. and guess what...

i passed!!!!

my heart was beating way fast the whole test, how lame. i stalled out at the submit button at the end, may have freaked out a little, clicked it, and i passed! i cannot even begin to explain to you how excited i am. the freaking roller coaster ride is over. it's over! no more tests for this school! 6 more clinicals, 2 little assignments, then DONE!

thank god. thanks for the prayers. thanks for the encouragement.

so what's the plan now? well...ANYTHING I WANT! we're about to go to a movie, then to the Spot with some friends to cheer on the Baylor basketball boys who play in NYC tonight...tomorrow = floating in the ocean with laura and MA if the weather's nice. (oh yah, they passed 2! yaaaaay!!!) maybe fishing? sandcastles? no school? P.E.R.F.E.C.T.I.O.N.

in other news, my favorite little girl turned the big ONE today! Happy Birthday to miss Kylie Brooke! look at how CUTE she is! she must take after her favorite cousin ;)

43,200

that's what stands between me and graduation. in minutes. this also translates to...
one month.
2,628,000 seconds.
30 days.
one HUGE test.
8 clinical days.
a million frustrating school employees.
and one impossible clinical instructor.

today is a good day, in that it marks the beginning of the end of all of this. for fear of being permanently labeled a "negative nancy" or "debbie downer" or some other equally lame and non-positive name, i hesitate to vent yet again. but i'm doing it anyways.

i am so far beyond frustrated with my school, the administration, and circumstances beyond our control. it is hard to remain positive when our hands are tied and there's nothing we can do to change situations that desperately need changing. and yes, my attitude stinks now. it does, i know. but regardless, i'm discouraged. and still have a lot to deal with. also, i'm applying for jobs, trying to figure out where i'll be next year, and basically just having a bad attitude.

so here's where the request comes in. a request i don't often make. prayer. pray that i don't explode. and don't blow up on these ridiculous people. ha. kidding...kinda. but really. i'm stressed, even if it is overreacting. and i'm just overwhelmed. i need to do well on this test, i need to feel at peace about career decisions, i need to know the best ways to handle situations with difficult people in positions of power, i need an attitude adjustment, i need direction, i need...

i don't know what i need. what we need. what my class of 34 needs. all i know is what we don't need. and that's anymore barriers. or disrespect. or discouragement. or this school.

one month. dear lord, one month.

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

there's no place like home.

This time tomorrow, i will be packing my car and heading home! I'll only be there for 2 days, and have a lot to do while I'm there, but I still can't wait :) Why? Because I get to see these crazies...

see the family resemblance?

Monday, March 16, 2009

it's colder than it oughta be in march.

I wish it would hurry up and warm up around here. (If you know me well, I'm sure your jaw just hit the floor after hearing that comment come from me, queen of "I'm Hot.")

It has been rainy and cold for days. To be honest, I really like this kind of weather, strange as that may be. But it makes my productivity and motivation levels plummet. All I want to do is lie around all day, wrapped up in a blanket, watching movies or something equally as non-school-related.

Current weather aside, I really just want it to be warm, sunny, and not raining. This is beach weather! And after March 31st, all I will have left is 6 clinical days and graduation.

So in between my days at the hospital come the days of hanging out at the pool, fishing, floating in the ocean, crabbing, building sandcastles, running on the beach? Marking things off of our "GTown List". Hop a cruise last minute?  The possibilities are endless people, and I for one cannot freaking wait.

This was the topic of discussion yesterday on our way home from our 2nd day of 8 hour test review, the 2nd day of "spring break."  Of course, this is all assuming I can tackle the exit exam on the first attempt. That being said, I'm off for day 3 of the oh-so-fun 8 hours of test review. Tomorrow? Day 4.

A Box of 96!

Today marks the start of a three week marathon of mayhem and deadlines that I'm hoping we will all survive. The odds of survival are in our favor, but for the sake of being dramatic I'll leave it as questionable.

After spending the first half of the day at Moody Library (UTMB, not Baylor's Moody Library, unfortunately) and getting sufficiently stressed out about, well, life in general I came home to a fun little surprise in my mailbox...some people just know how to make this pseudo-adult kid's day brighter.

So in case there was any question of whether or not my grandparents are the coolest around, this should answer it. Yes, they're cool. Beyond cool. They send jumbo coloring books, jumbo boxes of crayons, and fun markers. And basically I just love them. A lot.

Crawfish Boil

4:20...After realizing just how much I have to do over the next couple of days, and just how much I needed to be studying, I signed off of facebook, to check my school e-mail. And this is what I get. An e-mail entitled "TODAY!! Free Crawfish Boil-MARDI GRAS PARTY!" It looked a little something like this..."FREE for all UTMB Students. Crawfish, Shrimp, Sausage, Potatoes, and Corn. Sodas, Hurricanes, Beer." After about 20 minutes of telling myself all of the reasons why it would be a horrible idea to go to this instead of studying, I walked out the door, we picked up Laura, and headed to good ol' UTMB. (I have to eat dinner, so why not a free dinner, right? Ha)

5:15...Shortly after arriving, the same person who interviewed me when I applied to this school asked me if I wanted a drink. Not the same kind of drinks Baylor offered us. I laughed, and had a "we're not in Kansas anymore moment." After waiting in line for a little while with a million future doctors, we got served HUGE plates of food. Laura and I just stared at the crawfish. They still had eyes. Weird. Mary Alice taught us the proper crawfish peeling technique, and we eventually figured it out. Well, we kind of figured it out. Laura probably still has shrimp poop under her nails. This was a big concern. But we managed to eat all of our little crawfish. And my first crawfish experience was a success! Messy, but successful. Now I'm back home. With the lingering fishy odor to remind me of my good decisions. And this time, I'm being serious. I'm glad we went. It was a nice break and a fun time :)

What You Never Knew You Wanted to Know

I hate to say it, but I gave in to the infamous "25 THINGs" that has been making its way around facebook. I said if I was going to do it, I would just do it quickly, no big deal. Ha. Several hours later, here it is.

1. I love snail mail. More than that, I love getting packages in the mail. Love. All I get now are bills and pre-approved credit card crap. Where’s the fun in that? No thank you. I’d rather have a box full of fun, or a card that’s so lame it’s funny.

2. I like for the volume level on the TV to be set on an even number. Never an odd, evens only por favor. I don’t know why, I know it’s weird. I would rather have it just a little too loud and set at 18 or a little too soft and set on 16 than to have it on 17. And I have the kind of friends that after finding this out make sure it is set on an odd number at all times. It drives me crazy. They love it.

3. Little things annoy me. And the more I focus on not letting said things annoy me, the more I am painfully aware of just how truly annoying they are.

4. I’m a knuckle popper. Well, make that a bone popper in general. Shoulders, elbows, ankles, fingers, toes, knees, back, wrists, neck. You name it, I crack it. Often. It’s probably really disgusting for those around me, but I can’t stop. Oh yah, I bite my nails too. At least I don’t pick my nose.

5. In April 2007 I became a first time owner of a security system. A very thorough security system, complete with around the clock surveillance. A leaf blows across the porch, security alarm sounds. Wall creaks, alarm sounds. Shadow moves, alarm. Her name is Baylie.

6. I don’t like talking on the phone. Every now and then you’ll catch me in a phone-talking kind of mood, but it’s not often. I will text you a million times a day and e-mail you too. But phone calls? Eh, no thanks. Maybe I should work on my communication skills? Yah, I know.

7. I don’t really watch TV. The news, Law and Order SVU, and Jon and Kate Plus 8 are the only shows I’ve really watched at all in the past few months.

8. My mind works in 15 minute intervals, and I tend to schedule my life accordingly. Even if I know it only takes me 5 minutes to get somewhere, I plan for fifteen. If it’s 18 minutes, I plan for 30. And so the trend continues.

9. I grew up in the same town as my grandparents, aunt, and uncle. Our Waco family of 8. That is one of the greatest blessings in my life thus far.

10. I am shy. I am outgoing. I never shut up. I’ll go hours without saying a thing. I speak my mind, and don't voice my opinion. I am a million different things in different situations. I wish I were consistent.

11. I like books. I never finish them. Ever. Seriously. I wish I was joking, but I really can’t remember the last time I actually finished a book. I mean, how ridiculous is it to read a couple hundred pages and not read the last 2 chapters? Extremely ridiculous, I realize. Welcome to adult ADD and its many wonders.

12. I wish I could be a photographer. I got a new camera for Christmas and I love it. One day, I’ll get a digital SLR camera as well. I plan on being one of those moms that annoys the crap out of her kids by taking way too many pictures on a daily basis. According to my family, Baylie is the most photographed dog around, but hey, I’ve gotta practice.

13. I like my middle name. ANNE. The only time I don’t like it is when my brother says it. “Jessica Anne.” He said it just to annoy me growing up. Just because I told him he couldn’t call me that. I went by Jessica, and that’s what he needed to call me. Sometimes he included my last name too just for an added annoyance. This was usually when he had his nasty bare feet as close to my face as possible without touching me from the backseat on a family road trip. Or when he wanted to watch freaking Walker Texas Ranger and I just wanted to watch my favorite episode of Rescue 911 that I had watched a million times before. Oh brothers. Thank you, Jonathan Robert.

14. My memory is a weird thing. I can meet somebody one time, or have one casual conversation with a random person, and I will remember it forever. Give me a useless fact that I will never need to know, and I’ll tell you about it ten years later. Faces, names, anything people related…got it. Pay me $100 to tell you something I learned in a class last year, and it’s pretty safe to say you’re not going to be out any money.

15. Growing up, I loved new boxes of crayons and markers. New ones. All the time. I didn’t want the broken ones. No. No peeled off paper labels for me. No way. This was serious business. I would scan and copy the pages of my coloring book so that I could color them as many times as I wanted, making sure they were perfect. Outline in marker, fill in with crayon. That’s the only way to go.

16. I love jackets. And blankets. And bags. Somehow I find one of these three things at just about every store I go to, and think I have to have it. Good thing I have some self control, and a serious deficit in the bank account department.

17. I wish I could wear pajama pants or sweat pants 24/7. Let’s be honest, I pretty much already do. But I wish it were socially acceptable. Fashionable even.

18. I am a recovering PC user. In December, I saw the light, and the error of my ways. Now it’s Apple all the way. Goodbye Dell, hello MacBook. Once you go Mac, you never go back.

19. I love scrapbooking. In fact, I love everything craft related. Probably too much.

20. I’ve always wanted to adopt a kid. That plan has never been as real as it was today, as I sat through a lecture about childbirth. OHH EMM GEE people.

21. I want to run a marathon. Heck, even a half-marathon. The issue with this goal is the fact that I’m a horrible runner. You know that person you pass on the side of the road…the one whose face is redder than ever, is sweating like an obese old man, huffing and puffing like an 80 year old chain smoker, and looks like they could fall over at any given moment? Welcome to me and my running abilities, or lack thereof. I bought running shoes. Five months ago. I’ve worn them once. I’s a start? Like how I kid even myself?

22. School supply shopping. Why is it so great? Why am I obsessed with school supplies? Or office supplies? Or organization of said supplies? I am so ready for a break from school. But what will I do when I won’t have a reason to get a new pack of yellow fluorescent markers and post-it notes? Perhaps I’ll actually get a life. And stop being such a nerd.

23. I want to make a quilt. The problem is I can’t sew. And I don’t have a sewing machine, or a clue as to how to make a quilt. Maybe after I graduate, I should make friends with a group of gray haired old ladies who sit around all day and talk about what things were like when they were my age. They quilt, I’m sure of it. That’s probably my best bet for figuring out this whole quilt-making thing.

24. I think it’d be fun to go skydiving. Not bungee jumping. I’m way too much of a chicken to do either, but just saying that I want to go skydiving makes me sound cool and adventurous, right?

25. I told myself I would never do this 25 THINGS list. Nope, not going to do it. There’s no procrastination or boredom level that would lead me to this. See how well that worked out? What a disappointment I am. To myself. You’re welcome.

New Apartment Decor

We added something new to our apartment yesterday. We "decorated", if you will. Any guesses as to what these new decorations include? If you guessed blindingly white posters with tri-color sharpie art, you would be correct.

If you had come to my apartment last night this is what you would have seen. But only if you came within the 10 minute window they were actually on the wall. They came falling down shortly after, and are just hanging out on the kitchen table. New stickier tape is on the grocery list. Jealous of the decorations? You too can have posters as cool as these. They come complete with an exam on March 31st that you are required to pass to graduate. A test that not a single person passed this past week for our "practice exam", myself included. So, once new tape is purchased, this is what I will be staring at for the next month plus. Ha, pretty, I know.

And I have yet another "Jessica's a genius" story for you. (but to preface, I'm tired. Really tired. Not an excuse, but at least it makes me feel a little bit better about my dumb comments. Ha.) As I was leaving church this morning, the guy next to me asked if I was a student, and at which coffee shops I studied. He then proceeded to hand me his business card. He owns a restaurant/coffee shop near the Strand. When we got in the car, Mary Alice asked me where he was from (he had a cool accent). I was busy looking at the card he had just handed me that said "Czech, German, and Hungarian Drinks and Food." So my response to her question? "Hungaria." HUNGARIA!?!?! Seriously? I mean, really? Hungaria? Um, Hungary maybe? Yes, my first degree is in International Studies. Yes, I say dumb things at increasingly close intervals. Yes, I'm a genius. Holy crap Jessica.

One Step Closer

Cap and gown: ordered.
Graduation fee: paid.
Diploma ordered: check.
Parents' hotel room: booked.

But for now...
Calendar: over-filled.
Stress levels: rising.
To-Do lists: stacking up.
Counting down: every minute until April 24th.

So close. And yet still so far away.
2 months, 21 days. But who's counting?

Super Bowl XLIII

Football fan? Me 2. Need proof? Here's an excerpt from my convo with my roommate just minutes ago...

Me: I wish we could watch the Super Bowl instead of studying all night.

MA: Me too.

Me: It's not like I'm a fan of either team, but anything is better than this. I think I'll root for the Cardinals.

MA: Perfect. Then I'll root for the Stealers. My mom is rooting for the Stealers, and we have family friends who are huge fans.

Me: I really have no reason to root for the Cardinals. It just sounded good. And, I have friends who live in St. Louis, and they are Cardinals fans.

MA: (with a look of shock and disgust on her face) What?!?! Pleeease tell me you're joking! You know they are from Arizona, right? Please tell me you know this!

Me: Um, yah. Of course I knew that. Obviously. (foot in mouth, trying to take it back. Not successful. Damage is done.)

MA: (nothing's said, face tells all..."haha! I'm never going to let you live this down.")

So, for my fellow sports fans, a little piece of information for you....
St. Louis Cardinals =baseball team. Arizona Cardinals=football team.

Happy Super Bowling to you. Go Cardinals. Or Steelers. Or whoever, what do I know?
After all, it's all about the commercials anyways, right?

Have You Seen Them?

Have you seen these kids?

Alex is the coolest 3 year old around, and will talk your ear off about anything and everything. If you're lucky he will sing you Happy Birthday over and over. This usually involves him bringing you a candle from the nearest table/shelf so that you can blow it out. You will love it.

Kylie's wonderful. Beautiful and spoiled already. Big eyes, captivating smile, sweet little personality. Just shy of 1 and already has everyone wrapped around her little finger.

Have you seen my little cousins? I haven't either. Not since November. That's 2 months too long. So, no, they're not missing. I'm just missing them.

Good ol' Galveston

Most of you know all about my love/hate relationship with my current home of Galveston. I hate that I don't have access to many of the stores/restaurants I'm used to. I hate that there's only a couple of us still living here now. I hate that I have to drive to Houston for clinicals. Most of all, I hate my school, which is the reason I'm in Galveston in the first place. Yah yah, yada yada yada...

The real truth is, most of the time I find myself loving a lot of things about Galveston. I love the beach. I love that I drive next to the water every day. I love that last week I saw dolphins driving home from school. I love that it's diverse. I love the ridiculousness. I love the local restaurants, shops, and people. I love being able to fish or walk on the beach anytime I want. I love that it's a
community. I love that I've seen the true meaning of neighbors being neighbors. I love that people love it here.

I really love Galveston's traditions. Galveston is proud of its history, and many people are proud to call this island their home. With school consuming the majority of my time these days, I'm glad that I've had the opportunity to experience some of these traditions...and I'm especially excited for the next one on the list. Here's a little glimpse of us, being true "Galvestonians", living the local life...

DICKENS ON THE STRAND
(This has been going on for years...and is such a big deal in Galveston. Everyone comes dressed in Victorian-style clothing, or whatever other ridiculous costume they can find.Vendors from all over, one even selling fried alligator on a stick. Weird. Or you can buy a corset for hundreds of dollars. No thanks. But if all goes as planned, next year will involve us in full costume. Amazing costumes at that. Get ready, and be jealous.)

LONESTAR BIKE RALLY

(Picture 2 girls trying to look as much like bikers as possible, thousands of motorcycles all competing for which one is the loudest, and even more leather-wearing bikers with ridiculous face shields, vests, helmets and the other biker "necessities", and you have Galveston's Lonestar Bike Rally. But your experience at the rally can't possibly be as great as ours, unless you too are fortunate enough to get witnessed to by a self-proclaimed bi-polar Christian. He also serenaded us with his Kiowa love flute. Galveston's finest. Love.)

MOODY GARDENS FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS
(A rainy night tour through Moody Gardens and their random assortment of Christmas lights. Everything from a nativity scene, to marine life, ballerinas and toy soldiers, to a menorah. We topped the night off with "corn in a cup." Spent a whole $2 on it. Don't knock it 'til you try it. It's good.)

So what's next? Perhaps you've heard of a little thing called Mardi Gras? Well, Galveston goes all out, and I'm excited. Parades gallore, and fun to be had. Mardi Gras 2009, Galveston-style. Get ready, and come play with us!

God Loves a Terrier

Maybe it's the dog show on our TV, or talk of the movie "Marley and Me" recently, or maybe it's just because I'll find anything to think about rather than studying...I don't know, but I've got a case of the Baylie blues. That sounds lame I'm sure. But you would miss her too if you had a dog this cool. Don't worry, I get updates from the "grandparents" on a regular basis, haha. And I'll have her back sooner than later. Until then, she's loving Waco and having a yard to run in, loving antagonizing old Friskie, and getting spoiled by my parents.

Here, meet Baylie...

Yes, she's cute. Ridiculously cute. She's a handful. And a challenge.

Her back legs are much longer than her front. In fact, I've heard some people refer to her as a "giraffe." ha

She thinks shoe strings are an ideal afternoon snack.

She stands on just her hind legs on a regular basis, and walks. Like a person. Weird.

She'll try and steal your flip-flops right out from under your feet, and slobber on them for you.

She gets so excited to see new people, and has never met a stranger.

She barks like crazy at anything that rolls...strollers, bikes, shopping carts, scooters. You name it, and she's going crazy.

She LOVES her toys. She gathers them all, and sleeps surrounded by stuffed animals. Now she gets excited when she sees me come home with a Target or Wal-Mart bag. (spoiled? ha)

She's scared of the dark. She's stubborn.

Protective about her food and toys, and will let you know when you're in her territory.

She has to be right by you at all times...& will find a way to squeeze herself into any situation. Or she will lay on the back of the couch behind you, with her paw on your shoulder instead.

She loves to be chased. Anytime, anywhere. No matter how late I'm running behind.

She sleeps under the covers, with her head on a pillow. She snuggles.

She prefers you to sit on the floor next to her, and talk to/brush her while she's eating.  This is a new phenomenon, and I'm pretty sure I have my dad to thank for that one ;)

If you rub her tummy, you will be her best friend forever.

She's ridiculous. She's perfect. She's not perfect. She's precious. She has a definite personality. I wouldn't change a thing. She's Baylie. I love her. I miss her.

Weird how one crazy little animal can be so important.

And after all, even GOD LOVES A TERRIER. :)
